Parkland shooting anniversary: Steve Kerr remembers victims, praises gun reform efforts

Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr reflected via Twitter thread on the Parkland, Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. One year ago today, a gunman opened fire on the campus, killing 14 students and three adults, and injuring 17 others.

Kerr, who lost his father to gun violence in 1984, started the thread by sharing the experience of being in the exact same hotel room, in the exact same city, as the day of last year’s massacre.

Today i [sic] sat in the exact same Portland hotel room as i [sic] did one year ago, when I watched the horrific Parkland news on TV.

Like many Americans, Kerr’s heart is with those for whom February 14th will forever be pocked with grief. But he also praised the activism that arose from the tragedy, with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students leading the way.

Kerr calls on his fellow Americans to support organizations working to hold elected officials accountable on the issue of gun laws: March For Our Lives, Brady Campaign and Sandy Hook Promise.

The truly civilized man is marked by empathy.
