FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ The Parkland school shooter claimed to hear voices when police arrested him for the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last year.
In body-camera footage released Friday afternoon, he rambled about voices and demons as police had him pinned to the ground.
"Voices. Voices. Where's the voices?" Nikolas Cruz, then 19, said, looking up. "What the (expletive)? Where the (expletive) am I? Holy (expletive)! What happened?"
"Shut up," a Coral Springs police officer responds.
Cruz can later be heard weeping in a high-pitched voice as officers prepare to take him in.
The shooter's reaction at his arrest appeared to be a preview of the statement he later gave to Broward Sheriff's Detective John Curcio _ he said he heard voices telling him to kill and destroy.
But the video stood in contrast to another recording Cruz made sometime before his deadly rampage. In his own videos, Cruz calmly and chillingly announced that he will be "the next school shooter."
"It's gonna be a big event," the shooter said in the first video. "You're all going to die," he said.
Cruz is facing 17 counts of first-degree murder, and prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. If he was trying to set up an insanity defense by talking about demons, it's not likely to work, according to legal experts.
Defense lawyers in the Cruz case have given no indication that they plan to argue insanity.
