Parking is still a number one problem in Cathays, residents have said, after it was set it as top priority for the student ward.

At the partnerships and communities together meeting last night (pact), held at the students' union, illegal parking problems were reported as an ongoing problem outside the mosque on Wyverne Road – read our previous report here.

Cardiff council reported 110 fixed penalty notices issued for the locality since the beginning of July, with 60 of these notices issued in the last six weeks.

PCSO David Lloyd said the police were in talks with elders at the mosque. He said:

"Parking has been an ongoing issue and we are meeting with council officers to address issues concerning parking on double and single yellow lines.

"We have met with the local mosque and will be meeting them again to clarify the situation and speak to their congregation with regards to the anti-social behaviour which parking has become."

The number of parking permits issued per house was also highlighted as a key problem for the student hub. Members of the public told police and councillors in the meeting, for an area with high occupancy, the multiple permits mean there are no spaces for cars which have permits and said red and green zone sanctions were not being observed.

Cycling on pavements off roads around Cardiff University in a 'dangerous and inconsiderate manner' was also reported by residents – with Cathays Terrace, Corbett Road, Colum Road and Park Place being the key areas for this activity.

PCSO Lloyd said residents would be monitoring the area, counting the number of incidents of cyclists using the footpath and warning notices would be given to offenders. South Wales Police also told residents their message of keeping safe - which they hoped to pass on to students after a number of assaults and burglaries in the ward.

The next Cathays pact meeting will take place on 6 December at 7pm in the Crwys Road Methodist Church Hall.
