Parking could be banned outside 11 North Somerset schools

A ban on parking outside school entrances across North Somerset could be introduced in a bid to improve road safety.

North Somerset Council has drawn up a traffic order which would prohibit vehicles stopping, waiting or parking on roads outside schools between 8am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

The move would only allow vehicles to stop outside certain schools including the school bus or delivery drivers unloading goods.

It would also allow for emergency services and utilities to park outside.

The traffic order covers 11 schools right across North Somerset all who have problems with congestion outside on the road.

Although the schools do have keep clear markings on the road outside, these are only advisory and are regularly ignored by motorists.

Often this is due to parents dropping off and collecting their children by car, parking temporarily outside, causing a traffic hazard.

The new order would make the keep clear markings legally enforceable meaning those caught parking or stopping on them could be penalised.

A council spokesman: "At these locations there has been continued issues with people parking on the current keep clear markings.

"This is causing safety issues, particularly for children walking to and from school due to reduced visibility and additional congestion."

The schools which could see the order in place include All Saints Primary, All Saints Lane, Clevedon, Castle Batch Primary, Rawlins Avenue, Weston and Becket Road, Weston.

A ban on parking outside Crockerne Primary, Westward Drive, Pill, Dundry Primary, Dundry Road and Herons Moor Academy at Bransby Way, Weston could also be introduced.

Other schools where a traffic order could be implemented include High Down Infants and Junior School, Down Road, Potishead, Hutton Primary, Main Road, Hutton and St Nicholas Chantry, Clevedon at both Highdale Avenue and Highdale Road.

A parking ban could also be introduced at Uphill Primary, Ellesmere Road, Uphill and at Yeo Moor Primary School, Kennaway Road, Clevedon.

Some schools already have restrictions and traffic measures in place - such as zig zag lines  - preventing parking outside.

Those flouting the regulations risk being issued with a fine.

People have until November 22 to comment on the traffic order.
