Parking charges to return to Liverpool with car park discounts

Parking charges are set to return to Liverpool city centre for the first time since lockdown.

Pay and display charges were suspended by the council after the UK went into lockdown but the council says they will be reintroduced next week.

In a tweet, the council said the charges need to be reintroduced so shops can reopen safely.

The tweet said: "From Mon, 15 June, charging returns for pay & display bays in #Liverpool city centre.

"This is to ensure safety as shops reopen. From 15th, city centre residents can use a discounted monthly rate at LCC car parks."

The reintroduction of parking charges comes as the city starts to prepare for the next stages of lockdown in the coming weeks.

The owners of Liverpool One released plans for its reopening last week, with one way lanes and reduced opening hours for shops.

Trains and buses are also preparing for more people to start moving around in the coming weeks, with mandatory mask wearing being introduced from next Monday.

However, Liverpool's schools, already a number of weeks behind some other authorities in reopening, are likely to remain shut on Monday as the R rate in the North West was recorded as passing 1 last week.
