Parking charges to be brought in at Bristol beauty spots despite no existing car parks

Earlier this month, it was revealed the council was planning to start charging at 13 of the city's green spaces.

Charges are already being introduced at Blaise Estate, Oldbury Court and Ashton Court but it is now being considered to extend these to the remaining car parks managed by the council’s parks service, with about £80,000 raised to be allocated to maintaining and improving the city’s green areas.

However, not much detail has been released about these plans by the council yet.

And it appears some of the parks the council wants to start charging do not even have a dedicated car park.

BristolLive asked the council for further details, including the exact location at each park where parking charges would be brought in but are still waiting for confirmation.

One of the places the council wants to start charging is Stoke Park which, according to the council, has a "very small car parking area, part owned by the council".

The only car parking area BristolLive is aware of is a few spaces at the top of Lindsay Road on Sir John's Lane.

Similarly, charges would be brought in at Crews Hole woodland where the council says there is an "informal off road area used for parking".

While no exact location was given, BristolLive believes the council may be referring to about ten spaces on Crews Hole Road just past Lamb Hill.

Regarding introducing possible charges at Bedminster Down, the council said it would be "tarmac parking off the A38, not adopted highway".

With no exact location stated, BristolLive believes the council may be referring to a lane heading down towards the allotments. No parking spaces appeared to be formally marked out there.

Muller Road Recreation Ground is listed as another location where charges could be introduced.

The council said the charges may be brought in at a "a formal car park off Downend Road".

BristolLive believes the council may be referring to an area at the top of Downend Park.

And a councillor also questioned how the council may be able to introduce charges at Hengrove Park.

Cllr Tim Kent tweeted: "Council may not raise that much from their Hengrove Park charges - as they do not own a car park at Hengrove Park.

"The car park that is at Hengrove Park is private - and the council just gave them permission to build housing all over it."

Other areas where the council is considering introducing charges are: Redcatch Park, St Annes, Dundridge, Netham, Horfield Common/Ardargh, Eastville Park, Kings Weston Estate/Shirehampton, Hengrove Park and Eastwood Farm.

Park users have expressed a mixed range of opinions ahead of parking charges being introduced at several green spaces in the city.

Back in September, Bristol Live reported that Bristol City Council had put plans in place to install pay and display machines at the main Blaise Castle car park off Kings Weston Road, as well as in car parks at Oldbury Court and Snuff Mills.

The parking meters have now been installed at those locations, but they are still not in operation.
