Parking charges cut to £1 in Llanelli to help struggling town centre

Drivers will only have to pay £1 at a Llanelli multi-storey car park on Saturdays in a bid to help boost the town centre which has been struggling in recent years.

The initiative, which was initially brought about in the run up to Christmas, has been extended until the end of the year at Murray Street car park in the town centre.

Introduced on Saturday, February 1, it's hoped the offer will encourage more shoppers to stay in the town and support local traders after a number of businesses left the town centre.

Many shoppers have previously expressed that a lack of free and cheap parking is one of the reasons for the town centre's recent demise so have welcomed the scheme and praised it for making it cheaper and easier for people to access the town.

The move, orchestrated by Ymlaen Llanelli- a Business Improvement District led by town centre businesses - runs alongside the free parking available at council car parks in Llanelli between 10am and 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Along with Carmarthenshire Council the group extended the scheme after the popularity of it during the festive period.

Ymlaen Llanelli has held a number of events in the town centre including the popular Llanelli Food and Drinks Festival, Llanelli 80s Festival and a number of open aired cinemas to attract both locals and new visitors.

Lesley Richards, Chair of Ymlaen Llanell,i said: "We are delighted to be able to extend this popular initiative. We’re always looking for ways to encourage people to shop locally and we’ve found that the £1 parking has had a positive impact.

"The businesses love it, the public love it so it was a no-brainer to continue it all year. It will make it cheaper for people to attend our increasingly popular town events too."
