Parking charges at Glasgow Royal Infirmary scrapped for next three months

Parking charges at Glasgow Royal Infirmary will be scrapped for the next three months, the Scottish Government has confirmed.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman notified MSPs of the decision during Parliament yesterday afternoon.

Parking charges at the hospital will be waived as of this coming Monday (March 30), alongside that of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

"We cannot have barriers to staff working in the NHS", Ms Freedman said concerning the removal of the charges.

The move comes after Glasgow Live reported that staff at the Royal Infirmary were paying up to £18 per day while working at the hospital amid the coronavirus crisis.

It also follows Glasgow City Council scrapping all on-street parking in the city, with Councillor Alan Casey saying on-street parking bays will help support key workers who need their cars to travel during the outbreak.

However, Mr Casey, the SNP councillor for Dennistoun, confirmed the prevention of illegal parking on yellow lines and in disabled spaces will still be enforced.
