Parking charges and permit costs set to increase in one Greater Manchester borough

Plans to increase car parking charges across Trafford have been tabled by the council.

The authority is now consulting the public on proposed changes to parking fees and residents’ parking permits.

The cost of parking in town centres is set to rise to £2 for the first two hours, with the maximum charge rising by 50p to £6.

Meanwhile, residents parking permits are also set to increase from £41.75 to £47.50 per year.

The move is part of the council’s draft budget proposals for 2022/23.

The council described the changes as ‘regrettable’ and explained the move is due to ‘massive budget pressures on the council’.

A council spokesperson said: “The effect of the coronavirus (pandemic) has been enormous on individuals, their communities, family and friends – and council budgets.

“As a result, the council needs to make up a budget shortfall of £21.75m for the next financial year and is proposing closing this budget gap by £17.10m via a mixture of measures including additional funding, new savings and income generation.”

Coun James Wright, Trafford council’s executive member for housing and regeneration, said: “We regret that it is necessary to increase parking charges in some locations but we were forced into this action due to the massive budget challenge we face, and our priority has been to increase income where possible to protect frontline services.”
