Parking changes for suburban business strip as part of street overhaul

CHANGES: An artist's impression of the Shortland local centre upgrade.

NEWCASTLE council has revealed how its planned upgrade of Shortland's main business strip will look ahead of the start of construction next month.

The upgrade, part of the council's rolling local centre renewals program, will include the installation of a new pedestrian refuge and road cushions to reduce driver speeds on Sandgate Road, along with the introduction of a 40km/h speed limit through the area.

A new light traffic thoroughfare will also remove heavy vehicles over 10 tonnes between Wetlands Place and Vale Street.

The release of concept images for the upgrade come after the council endorsed a public domain and traffic plan for the area in May.

It is also now seeking feedback on the potential introduction of timed parking in Hansen Place to address concerns about the turnover of spaces.

"When we spoke to the community earlier this year we heard that safety was a key concern, but so was the ability to get a park near the shops at key times during the day," Newcastle lord mayor Nautali Nelmes said.

"Increasing the turnover of parking spaces means it will be easier for people to get here and access shops and services."

Feedback on the timed parking options can be provided via the council's website until November 8.

"Shortland residents are passionate about supporting local businesses, so improvements to the local centre such as new footpaths, landscaping and seating will make it a more attractive place to visit," Cr Nelmes said.
