Tenterfield is known as the birthplace of the nation, but it is also the birthplace of famous singer and entertainer Peter Allen.

Now the historic town wants to celebrate by launching its first Peter Allen Festival in September.

One of the driving forces behind the party project is Vince Sherry, of the Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry and Business.

"This has been something the community of Tenterfield has been wanting to do for a number of years and now it's happening," he said.

Mr Sherry said the New England town was proud Allen has been born in Tenterfield in 1944, and that his family had a long history with the district.

"He still has family living here and we needed their permission to host the event, and they have given us their blessing."

Allen's grandfather, George Woolnough, was a saddle maker, who he later immortalised in the famous song Tenterfield Saddler.

Mr Sherry said the old blue granite saddlery on High Street remained one of Tenterfield's most popular tourist spots.

Allen also lived in Lismore with his mother and sister after his father committed suicide in 1958.

A year later he moved to the Gold Coast looking for work as a musician.

His biggest successes came in the early 1980s and he was known for his flamboyant stage persona and lavish costumes.

Allen died in 1992, and in 1993 he was posthumously inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.

Mr Sherry said like the Elvis Festival in Parkes, where fans dress up as their idol for the January gig, he wanted Peter Allen fans to dress up in any style of his, including the singer's trademark Hawaiian shirt.

"We will be holding singing competitions at the festival and we would love people to dress up in their best Peter Allen gear," he said.
