Parked car 'flips onto roof after being hit by HGV'

A HGV driver smashed into a parked car, 'causing it to flip onto its roof', before driving away, it is claimed.

This was the scene of devastation on Fountains Street, in Stretford, in the early hours of Monday.

The owner of the car, Jamie Scot Williams, said he was his wife were woken at around 3.45am this morning after a neighbour knocked on their door.

They were shocked to see the Vauxhall Corsa at the other end of the street on its roof.

A brick wall was also left damaged.

The car was used by Jamie's wife Sarah, a carer, to get to work and his daughter, Savannah, when she needed to travel with her own daughter.

Jamie, 44, a programmer, said: "Our neighbour knocked on at 3.45am, so it must have happened around 3.30am.

"We live near a motorway and think the driver may have taken a wrong turn. There are tyre tracks at the top of the road.

"It flipped over onto its roof. The doors were bashed in. They managed to put it on a recovery vehicle, but it was billowing a lot of white smoke.

"When it hit our car, it took out the neighbours wall too. It was a good three houses down."

He added: "It was a shock to see first thing in the morning. To pull it that far down seems ridiculous. Somebody could have been sat in the car."

The incident has been reported to Greater Manchester Police. The force said an investigation has been launched and that enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log number 259 of June 10, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
