Park Street fire: Everything we know about Bristol blaze

Firefighters tackled a huge blaze that erupted in a city centre shop and a major road was closed.

Crews from across Bristol raced to Park Street just before 3pm today (May 19) after reports of a fire.

Photographs from the scene showed black smoke billowing out across the centre, with flames rising above the terraced buildings.

Firefighters had to pull down ceilings inside the four-storey property as they extinguished the blaze.

How did the fire start?

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the fire has been reported as an unknown ignition at the moment.

It's likely a full fire investigation will take place tomorrow.

When did it start?

Firefighters from Temple, Avonmouth, Patchway, Kingswood and Southmead were called at 4:49pm.

Was the shop damaged?

A fire spokeswoman said firefighters were 'pulling down ceilings' as they tackled the blaze inside.

Photographs also showed flames coming out of the roof, so it looked like the building suffered extensive damage.

Was there much disruption?

Park Street was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze. The road is a major link road for the whole city, so closing the route for two hours caused long delays in Clifton and Hotwells.

At the time of the incident, the authority urged people to avoid the area.

Was anyone hurt?

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no reports of anyone requiring hospital treatment or needing to be evacuated.
