Park search over Sydney underworld murder

A park in southwest Sydney has become the focus of an ongoing police investigation into the 2020 shooting murder of underworld figure Mejid Hamzy.

Police said officers would search Deepwater Park, Panania, as well as a creek adjacent to Kelso Park South and Marco Reserve on Tuesday.

Hamzy, 44, was gunned down early on October 19, 2020 at Condell Park - another execution in the continuing feud between the Hamzy and Alameddine crime families.

In a related development on Tuesday, Hamzy's cousin Ibrahim Hamze, 29, was arrested in the Gold Coast after NSW Police initiated an arrest warrant for his extradition.

A NSW Police spokeswoman declined to give further details to AAP citing "operational reasons".

Hamze's lawyer Fadi Abbas confirmed his arrest but refused to elaborate on charges levelled against the underworld figure embroiled in the deadly criminal family saga that has seen several members of the Hamzy clan executed in recent months.

A 38-year-old man has previously been charged with murder and he remains before the courts.

A grey Toyota RAV4, believed to be used in Hamzy's murder, was found burned out in a nearby street.

Detectives have released CCTV footage, depicting events before and after the shooting, including three cars - a black Mercedes-Benz AMG CLA45, grey Toyota RAV4, and white BMW 328i - travelling in convoy at Condell Park.

The footage shows two men in dark clothing leaving the RAV4 on Simmat Avenue, about 7.25am and there's also footage of Hamzy attempting to flee Simmat Avenue after the shooting, followed by the RAV4.

Two men in dark clothing are seen running south in Colechin Reserve, Condell Park, about 7.35am. The hood worn by one of the men falls momentarily, revealing blond hair.

One of the men was wearing a distinctive black and grey hoody with dark pants. The other man was wearing a dark coloured hoody with three distinctive stripes on the back and dark track pants.

Criminal groups squad commander Detective Acting Superintendent Chris Goddard said detectives believe the men are locals.

"Their movements lead us to believe that both men know the area very well and may reside nearby, so we ask anyone from around East Hills and Panania to take a look at this footage, because you might recognise them," Mr Goddard said.

"We believe both these men can assist our inquiries and would like to speak with them."
