Park cordoned off for huge police search after bag of bullets found under tree

A park was cordoned off by police to carry out a huge search after a bag of bullets was found under a tree.

Officers were called to Derby Park, in Bootle, on Wednesday morning after the ammunition was discovered in a small plastic bag.

Police quickly cordoned off the park shortly before 10am and carried out an open land search of the area.

Despite combing through the park, nothing else was found at the scene but the cordon remained around the park for a number of hours.

After the scene was reopened by officers, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We attended at Derby Park in Bootle at 9.55am this morningin response to information and recovered a quantity of bullets.

"An open area search of the park was carried out but nothing else was recovered and the incident was stood down."

People in the area reported seeing multiple police vans at Derby Park throughout the day.

The park was reopened at around 1.30pm/
