Parish priest slams Leo Varadkar and says he won't be following his rules

A well-known priest has said that he will not be following Leo Varadkar's "off the cuff" comments after he said that Communions and Confirmations would not be going ahead this summer.

The Tanaiste made the comments at a press conference yesterday when he was asked if parishes would be allowed to proceed with the celebrations after July 5, to which Mr Varadkar replied, “They’re off, unfortunately".

Fr Toomey, administrator of the parishes of Ardfinnan, Ballybacon and Grange, and Newcastle/Fourmilewater in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore, took to Twitter to express his frustrations.

He said: “I will not be following the 'off the cuff' statement by the @LeoVaradkar.

"I am planning to celebrate two Confirmations in my parish planned and will continue to celebrate the Baptism with families, if they wish me to do so and until such time as my Bishop advises otherwise."

The priest is a regular celebrant on RTE’s weekday Mass.

Health authorities have written to three dioceses with particularly high rates of Covid to ask that they postpone Communion and Confirmation ceremonies.
