Paris Seeks to Appoint New Ambassador to Iran

Paris has announced that a French ambassador would return to Tehran “soon”, in a sign of improved relations between the two countries.

Paris also said that a new Iranian ambassador is expected to land in the French capital.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, the first day of a US-led meeting in Warsaw where Washington mobilized the largest international gathering against Iranian policies.

France did not send its Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to the conference on peace and security in the Middle East. Instead, it chose lower-ranking official Nicolas de Riviere, the French Foreign Ministry's political director.

Last year, Paris froze a decision to nominate an envoy to Tehran over claims Iranian intelligence officials had planned an attack on an opposition group outside the French capital.

In October, France said there was no doubt Iran’s intelligence ministry was behind the June plot to attack an Iranian opposition rally.

Le Drian told parliament's foreign affairs committee on Wednesday that his country is close to reaching a conclusion on the exchange of ambassadors as long as Iran remains committed to the 2015 nuclear deal."

French sources told Asharq Al-Awsat on Thursday that the appointment of a new ambassador to Iran “is under discussion.”
