Ousmane Dembele: In all the chaos at the end of the game, I didn’t get around to mentioning that Dembele paid tribute to Diogo Jota, mimicking his famous cross-legged Fifa gaming celebration. It was a lovely touch. .
“It was very difficult to hear the news,” says Marquinhos of Jota. “We have got Portuguese players in the dressing room and they were with him only a few weeks ago playing in the Nations League. So we wanted to cheer them up. Jota deserves all the tributes in the world. You don’t want to see accidents like that. Also a shout out to Jamal Musiala, who suffered a serious injury. It’s something you do not want to see on the field.”

“It is always difficult to play when you are two men down but we showed the attitude to win the game and scoring that second goal was really important in such a huge competition like this one,” says the PSG captain in an interview with Dazn.

A tip of the Tyrolean hat to Thomas Muller: On the occasion of his final appearance for Bayern Munich, the German’s last act was to “think” (translation: pretend) he got kicked in the head by Nuno Mendes, win a penalty for getting kicked in the head by Nuno Mendes and then have that penalty overturned because it turned out he hadn’t got kicked in the head by Nuno Mendes.
Muller leaves the club as a free agent after making over 750 appearances and winning 33 trophies. He’s only 35, keeps himself in great nick and has never had any pace to lose so I suspect we haven’t seen the last of him on a football pitch. I’d love to see him in the Premier League so get him signed, Sunderland!!!

A quick long recap: A first half in which both goalkeepers made stunning saves ended with Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala suffering what looked like a broken ankle in a collision with Gianluigi Donnarumma. The PSG goalkeeper and other players looked traumatised in the immediate aftermath of the incident, which seemed to be nothing more than an unfortunate accident.
The first 30 minutes of the second half were scrappy and fairly uneventful by the standards of what was to follow in the final 15. Manuel Neuer livened up proceedings by doing his best to gift PSG an opening goal with a wayward pass to Kvicia Kavaratskhelia. Ousmane Dembele failed to capitalise on the error, but PSG scored through Desire Doue after Harry Kane had given the ball away cheaply in midfield. Soon after, England’s finest thought he’d made up for his mistake by heading past Donnarumma, only to see his effort correctly ruled out for offside.
As Bayern Munich continued their increasingly desperate search for an equaliser, Willian Pacho and then Lucas Hernandez were sent off, reducing PSG to nine men. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the French side somehow doubled their lead through a goal scored by Dembele at the second time of asking on the counter-attack. In one final twist of the knife, Bayern Munich were awarded a penalty deep in added time only for it to be overturned after a pitchside review.

Peep! Peep! Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Well, that was nuts. A decent game comes to a quite bonkers end with PSG advancing to the semi-finals. They finished the game with nine men as Bayern Munich threw the kitchen sink, table, chairs, kettle, toaster, air fryer, microwave and fridge at them in the closing minutes. Bayern Munich are out, Thomas Muller no longer plays for them and PSG will play Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final.

This. Is. Insane. Nine-man PSG stop wasting time briefly to allow Joao Neves and Ousmane Dembele to canter upfield on a counter-attack. It’s a two-on-one and Neves shits the ball sideways to Ousmane Dembele, who spanks it off the bar. Moments later he has it in the net, after PSG recycle the ball, Achraf Hakimi does superbly to play the ball his way after beating two defenders and Dembele fires it into the bottom corner.

90+4 min: Bayern Munich corner. If they can score in these closing minutes, one presumes they will go on to win against nine men. Muller gets the near post flick-on from Olise’s delivery but the ball skitters off towards the far touchline.
Red card! PSG are down to nine men!
90+2 min: Lucas Hernandez, who has only just come on to the field, is shown a straight red for swinging an elbow into the face of Raphael Guerrero as the pair of them ran upfield. Hernandez had the ball at his feet, Guerrero was giving chase and the PSG substitute swung his elbow.

90 min: Dayot Upamecano, of all people, shoots from a narrow angle in an advanced position on the inside-right. His effort doesn’t trouble Donnarumma at his near post.
89 min: PSG substitution: Boey, the substitute, is replaced by Raphael Guerrero.

87 min: Kane thought he had atoned for his earlier error, stooping to head a cross from the left into the bottom corner. It won’t count because he mistimed his run and was offside.

82 min: Willian Pacho gets a straight red for a high, reckless tackle on Leon Goretzka, who had just come on as a substitute. The European champions are a goal up and a man down.
GOAL! PSG 1-0 Bayern Munich (Doue 79)
PSG are in front: With the smile firmly back on his face, Doue celebrates after putting his side ahead. Having dropped deep, Harry Kane coughed up cheap possession in the centre-circle, PSG broke forward and Doue scuffed a shot into the bottom left-hand corner from the edge of the area. Did Manuel Neuer lose his footing as he tried to scramble across his line to keep it out? I think he might have.

74 min: Yards outside his penalty area, Mauel Neuer plays a pass straight to Kvaratskhelia. As the German tries to retrieve it with a desperate lunge, it breaks to Dembele. He sends a low shot trundling goalwards from distance. The ball rolls about a foot wide of the left upright and Neuer has really got away with one there.
71 min: Apologies, it seems to be Bradley Barcola who has made way for Dembele, so I’m not sure what it is exactly that left Desire Doue looking unimpressed.
70 min: PSG substitution: Ousmane Dembele comes on for Desire Doue, who doesn’t look too impressed at being hooked.
69 min: Konrad Leimar is penalised for a high boot which caught – I think – Achraf Hakimi in the head. He’ll miss Bayern Munich’s next game, if they progress.
66 min: If the scores are level at the end of normal time, we’ll have 30 minutes of extra time because that’s exactly what these players need at the end of a long, gruelling season.
65 min: Michael Olise fires over the bar under pressure from Pacho after connecting with a looping cross from the left.

63 min: The pitches at this tournament have been poor and this one seems no exception. The players keep slipping on grass that has been laid over astro-turf and doesn’t seem very well anchored or moored.
61 min: Desire Doue takes on and beats Konrad Leimar with a stepover and a darting run down the inside right. He squares the ball across the face of the Bayern goal but there’s nobody there to tap it home. Harry!?!?!?! Where are ya?!?!?!?!
59 min: Serge Gnabry catches Willian Pacho on the ankle with a very late challenge and is very lucky to avoid a booking. The match is quite scrappy at the moment and is constantly being interrupted by niggly fouls and free-kicks.

55 min: Serge Gnabry tries to send a cross from the left into the PSG box but his effort blocked. Bayern Munich are on top at the moment.
51 min: Harry Kane picks out a Kingsley Coman run through the middle but with Marquinhos closing him down and forcing him wide, the Bayern Munich winger shoots feebly, straight at Donnarumma. He looked like he was running in treacle or wet cement. Some of these players look very, very tired.
48 min: Kvaratskhelia plays a through ball in behind the Bayern Munich defence to put Bradley Barcola through on goal. He’s clean through and shapes to curl the ball into the far corner, but Manuel Neuer reads his intentions and pulls off a sensational save to tip the ball away. That’s a terrific save from the 39-year-old.
Second half: PSG 0-0 Bayern Munich
46 min: The game resumes with Serge Gnabry on for the unfortunate Musiala.
Musiala: I’m no doctor but the Bayern Munich player has suffered what looks like a badly broken and/or dislocated right ankle. Given the broadcaster’s understandable reluctance to show replays of the incident in which he suffered the injury, it’s difficult to know whether his side should have had a penalty.
I’ve seen it a few times and I can confirm that Donnarumma dived and got the ball cleanly as he tried to prevent it going over the byline. Musiala was in his way, trying to dart between the goalkeeper and Upamecano to get the ball and took the full force of the goalkeeper’s weight. It was no foul and a complete accident, in my opinion. Others are available.

A fairly even opening 45 minutes comes to a grisly end with Jamal Musiala suffering an injury so gruesome it left Gianluigi Donnarumma and several other players who saw it looking extremely green around the gills. Here’s hoping he makes a full recovery as quickly as possible.
Both goalkeepers have made superb saves to help keep the deadlock unbroken, while Michael Olise and Harry Kane have both missed very good chances. Olise was denied by a splendid Donnarumma save, while Kane misjudged a header you’d expect him to score in his sleep. Neuer’s double-save from Kharatskheila was another noteworthy moment in the first half.

Bayern Munich's Jamal Musiala is badly hurt
Donnarumma’s intervention is not deemed to be a foul but Musiala seems to have suffered a terrible injury in the collision between the two players. Several of his teammates are around him and they all look shocked by whatever it is they’ve seen. Some walk away with their shirts covering their faces, while Donnarumma is hunkered down in his penalty area, looking ashen-faced. As Musiala receives treatment, the whistle goes for half-time but not everyone makes their way to the dressing-room. Here’s hoping the injury isn’t as bad as it seems.

45+3 min: Donnarumma darts out of his goal to retrieve a ball that one of his defenders was trying to shepherd out of play at the byline under pressure from Jamal Musiala. He clatters into Musiala and that could be a penalty.

Disallowed goal! Michael Olise curls a free-kick across the face of the PSG goal and Upamecano powers home a bullet header. The linesman’s flag goes up and it won’t count – he was well offside.
45 min: Vitinha gives away possession very cheaply a few yards outside his own penalty area and within seconds, Coman has a sight on goal but scuffs his shot from about 16 yards out.
41 min: It’s another splendid save from Donnarumma, who displays lightning reflexes to get down and save from Musiala, who from six yards out got his toe to a cross-shot from Aleksandar Pavlovic and steered it goalwards. At least I think he got a touch. Replays are inconclusive but either way, the ball was heading goalwards and Donnarumma did extremely well to keep it out.
40 min: Sacha Boey shoots over the bar on the follow-up from 22 yards out after Jamal Musiala had a shot blocked by Joao Neves.
38 min: Oh Harry! Leaping in the air with Willian Pacho, Harry Kane leaps to meet a cross from Coman and sends a thumping header a couple of feet over the bar from six yards out. That was an excellent chance but he couldn’t keep his effort down.
36 min: That substitution has prompted a positional switch for Bayern, with Boey playing on the right side of their defence and Konrad Laimer moving across to the left.
33 min: Bayern Munich substitution: Still suffering the effects of the injury he suffered earlier, Josip Stanisic goes off and is replaced by Sacha Boey. The French sub doersn;t hang about, getting down the right to overhit a cross towards the far post.
30 min: Kvaratskhelia picks up the ball on the left wing and embarks on a run that takes him to within about two yard of the goal-line. He had too much speed for Upamecano and took a shot that was saved by Neuer’s leg. The Georgian was unable to beat the Bayern goalkeeper with his follow-up from close range either.

26 min: After excellent work by Kane and Musiala to work the ball out wide, Michael Olise brings a fine save out of Donnarumma with a shot that was heading for the top corner. The Italian was at full stretch and stopped the ball with a strong right hand.
25 min: From deep, Dayo Upamecano plays an up-and-under in behind the Bayern Munich defence. None of his teammates were expecting him to do so and the ball bounces safely into the hands of Donnarumma.
22 min: Fabian Ruiz fires a very presentable chance high over the bar from 18 yards after excellent work from Fabian Ruiz, Desire Doue and Kvaratskhelia.

19 min: PSG break at speed, with Hakimi sprinting at speed into space on the inside right. He curls a low ball across the face of the Bayern goal but the angle at the far post is too tight for Kvaratskhelia. Side-netting.

15 min: Bayern Munich corner. Michael Olise plays an inswinger to the back post, where Donnarumma is blatantly blocked by Upamecano as he attempts to leap for the ball. He wins a free-kick.
13 min: Manuel Neuer plays a free-kick on the halfway line long and wide to Kingsley Coman on the left touchline. The Bayern winger is unable to prevent the ball going out of play for a throw-in.
9 min: Achraf Hakimi cuts inside and plays the ball inside to Fabian Ruiz, only for PSG to lose it. Bayern Munich counter upfield with Michael Olise on the ball. This game is being played at a fair old clip early doors.
9 min: With three of his teammates queuing up to get on the end of his cross from the right, Konrad Laimer slices what looks like a shot from a tight angle high over the bar. Harry Kane gives him the stink-eye.
7 min: Bayern try a free-kick from the training ground that possibly should have stayed there. Olise rolled the ball forward so Joshua Kimmich could square it from the right but his cross was poor and failed to beat the first man.

Old man yells at cloud: I’ve never been to a monster truck rally but given the razmatazz, noise, light show, loud music and number of braying Americans in the stands of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, I suspect it wouldn’t be entirely dissimilar to what’s going on before this game.
Not long now: Well, it may be a while, given Fifa’s inadvisable Club World Cup wheeze of introducing the players one by one instead of having the teams walk out side by side in the traditional gladatorial style. Marquinhos, last of the PSG players, has just made his way out on to the pitch and now it’s time for Bayern’s players to make their grand entrances.
The stadium: The roof of the Mercedes-Benz stadium is closed, the air-con is switched on and in his pre-match interview, Vincent Kompany tells DAZN that “this is the first time in this tournament I’ve done a pre-match interview where I’m not already sweating”.
Those teams: Luis Enrique sends out the same PSG side that started against Inter Miami last weekend. Ousmane Dembele remains on the bench after coming on as sub in that 4-0 win for his first appearance of the tournament.
Vincent Kompany makes two changes to the side that started against Flamengo in the last 16. Jamal Musiala and Aleksandar Pavlovic come in for Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka.

These European heavyweights met 7,000 miles away in November, when Bayern Munich prevailed courtesy of a Kim Min-jae goal at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League group stage.Luis Enrique’s position appeared to be under serious threat because at the time it was a defeat that left PSG in grave danger of making an ignominious and early exit from a competition they would eventually go on to win in fine style.
While PSG may be the European champions, their recent record against Bayern is not good. The French side have lost each of their past four matches against the German champions, failing to score in any of them. However, the PSG side that will line up against Bayern today is a completely different animal to previous incarnations of a side whose backbone – or apparent lack thereof – was the subject of much discussion and mockery in European football circles. In winning a Ligue1, Coupe de France and Champions League treble last season they’ve made a statement and now have nothing to fear.

Premier League staple Anthony Taylor leads today’s team of match officials and may find himself on the wrong end of some “banter” from Bayern fans who will not have forgotten the penalty he failed to award Germany in their thrilling Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat against Spain for what they and others felt to be a fairly blatant Marc Cucurella handball.
With the scores level at 1-1, the Spanish full-back blocked a powerful, goalbound Jamal Musiala shot with his hand, Taylor decided against awarding a spot-kick and Spain went on to win the match and tournament. It was subsequently decreed by some panel of eggheads that Talor had made the wrong decision, although to be fair, Cucurella’s arm was stretched resolutely downwards rather than upwards or to one side. As for whether or not it was in a natural position? Well, you can argue that one until the cows come home.
Early team news: Ousmane Dembele missed all three group games through injury but returned as a substitute for his side’s win over Inter Miami in the first knockout round. The winger was sent off in PSG’s defeat at the hands of Bayern in November and will be hoping to make amends if he gets a run-out today.
Bayern Munich will be without Leroy Sane, who departed the club to join Galatasaray on a free transfer when his contract expired the day after he helped the German side beat Flamengo last weekend. Alphonso Davies (ACL) and Hiroki Ito (broken foot) remain sidelined, while Kim Min-jae (achilles) is nearing full fitness but seems unlikely to feature in this tournament. Due to leave Bayern as soon as their interest in the Club World Cup ends, Thomas Muller could make his 756th and final appearance for the club in Atlanta today.

Quarter-final: PSG v Bayern Munich
A much maligned vanity project and Fifa cash and power grab, the Club World Cup 2.0 has now reached that point where, whatever their feelings about having to travel stateside for up to a month at the end of a gruelling season, the remaining teams will now be of a mind that seeing as they’ve made it this far, they might as well try to go a little further. Chelsea and the Brazilian side Fluminense have already made it to the last four and in a few hours one of PSG and Bayern Munich will join them.
The European heavyweights meet for a noon showdown at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, a 75,000-capacity venue that is normally home to the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United. Notable for its iconic retractable roof and 360-degree halo video display, it is unlikely to be full given that Fifa were struggling to sell reduced price tickets for its upper tiers during the week at a cut-price $44.
Assuming the pinwheel roof is closed for today’s match, any potential last-minute walk-ups are unlikely to be put off by the forecast 32C heat forecast for Atlanta this afternoon. The cool conditions inside this EnormoDome will also suit the aggressive pressing style so synonymous with both Bayern and PSG.
