Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo has admitted it might have been a mistake to allow Edinson Cavani to join Manchester United on a free transfer.
Cavani, 33, joined United on deadline day of the summer transfer window after failing to agree a new contract with the French champions.
The Uruguayan spent seven years in the French capital, winning six Ligue 1 titles on his way to becoming the club's top goalscorer.
Cavani wasn't the only star to depart for nothing as club legend Thiago Silva also called time on his spell in France, joining United's Premier League rivals Chelsea on a free.
Both Cavani and Silva opened their goalscoring accounts for their new clubs at the weekend and Leonardo believes PSG might have made in mistake in not trying harder to keep them at the Parc des Princes.
"At one moment, we have to say “what are we going to do?" he told the club's official media channels.
"We spoke clearly with them. It was a moment where we could not give them exactly what they wanted. It was a financial and generational problem.
"It was the moment to count on Marquinhos and Kimpembe.
"The decisions were difficult to take. Aside from that, we could have made a mistake."
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backed his new forward to add to his goal tally following his goal against Everton at the weekend.
"Hopefully, hopefully," he said when asked whether Cavani's goal would be the first of many for his new club."
"He's getting better and better, sharper and sharper. Today was more about seeing the game out. He did well."
