Paris Olympics: French police arrest Egypt wrestler suspected of sexual assault

An Egyptian wrestler participating in the Olympic Games in Paris was taken into custody by French law enforcement in the early hours of Friday, according to prosecutors. The arrest was made in connection with allegations of inappropriate physical contact with a female patron at a bar.

The Paris prosecutor's office stated that Mohamed Elsayed, aged 26, was apprehended outside a cafe in the city's 13th district around 5 am. The wrestler is accused of "placing a hand on the buttocks of a woman patron".

Elsayed, a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, suffered a defeat against Hasrat Jafarov of Azerbaijan in the 67 kg Greco-Roman wrestling event on Wednesday. Jafarov went on to secure the bronze medal in the competition.

Coincidentally, another Egyptian athlete sharing the same name claimed a bronze medal in epee fencing at the Paris Olympics.

At present, it remains unclear whether the wrestler has been released from custody. Le Parisien, a French newspaper, reported that Elsayed was "roaring drunk" at the time of the incident.
