Paris fire: Firefighters not sure they can save Notre Dame Cathedral as it is ripped apart by fire

Flames continue to rip through the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris and firefighters say they may not be able to stop them.

The next hour and a half is "crucial" to saving the treasured landmark, a Paris Fire Department spokesman has said as crews battle to contain the blaze.

The Cathedral has suffered "colossal damage" during Christianity's Holy Week of Easter.

Paris Fire Chief Jean-Claude Gallet said it is unclear if city firefighters will be able to keep the blaze from spreading and causing more destruction.

Speaking outside the cathedral, he said "we are not sure we are capable of stopping the spreading" to Notre Dame's second tower and belfry.

He said: "If it collapses, you can imagine how important the damage will be."

French President Emmanuel Macron has arrived at the scene where devastating footage earlier captured the moments the spire of one of Paris' most recognisable landmarks collapsing.

He earlier released a statement saying it was like watching "a part of us burn".

A church spokesman said all of the cathedral 's frame was burning after the spire collapsed, while the emergency services fought to salvage the priceless artwork stored in the cathedral.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo described it as a "terrible fire" and urged people at the scene to stay safe.

While authorities are still investigating the cause of the blaze, a ‘stray flame’ linked to £5million renovation work is thought to have sparked the inferno in the loft at around 5.30pm.
