Parents are being warned to check their stairgates after a third of models sold in the UK failed safety tests.
A study by Which? on 11 models found four sub-standard.
One, the Summer Infant Retractable Safety Gate, failed several tests.
The Fred Safety Screw Fit Wooden Gate was found to have a gap at the bottom big enough for a simulated baby’s hip.
The BabyDan Avantgarde failed an impact test, moving more than 25mm when a 10kg weight hit it.
The Hauck Autoclose ’n Stop’s auto-close system did not completely close it, Which? found.
The consumer group urged parents to return these stairgates.
Summer Infant said it no longer made the product Which? tested and had no reports of incidents while using it.
Fred Safety said the test found one way its product could be wrongly installed, but that it was withdrawing it to make a slight modification.
BabyDan said other tests had verified its Avantgarde stairgate safe to use.
Hauck rejected the findings.
