Parents warned after third of stair gates fail safety tests

Parents are being warned to check their stair gates after a third of models sold in the UK failed safety tests.

A study by Which? on 11 models found four substandard.

One, the Summer Infant Retractable Safety Gate, failed several tests.

The Fred Safety Screw Fit Wooden Gate was found to have a gap at the bottom big enough for a baby’s hip.

The BabyDan Avantgarde failed an impact test, moving nearly an inch when a 22lb weight hit it. The Hauck Autoclose ’N Stop’s system did not completely close it, Which? found.

The consumer group urged parents of toddlers to return these stair gates.

Summer Infant said it no longer made the product Which? tested and had no reports of incidents while using it.

Fred Safety said the test found one way its product could be wrongly installed, but that it was withdrawing it to make a slight modification.

BabyDan said other tests had verified its Avantgarde stair gate as safe to use.

Hauck rejected the findings.
