Parents warned about school uniform delays just days before the start of term

A busy Cardiff school uniform supplier is warning parents and children of delays caused by disruptions to the supply chain.

YC Sports say they are working "around the clock to pack orders" to make sure children have the majority of their uniforms in time.

Some parents have reported ordering items in the middle of July that still haven't arrived.

They are the latest company to report issues with the supply chain. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has called for the UK Government to act to help solve a shortfall in lorry drivers which has contributed to product shortages across UK industry.

Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the BRC, said: "The UK faces a shortfall of 90,000 HGV drivers and it is consumers who will ultimately suffer for this."

YCSports say they being ordering their uniforms a year in advance but "issues with port congestion" have caused delays.

A statement from the business says: "Unfortunately, along with many other businesses, this year we have been hit with many disruptions in our supply chain. We begin ordering your uniform a whole year in advance for June/July/August delivery.

"There have been issues with port congestion as 2.4million 20ft containers are unable to dock and have to travel to a different destination in the hope that when they get back are able to dock.

"For a usual shipment it takes 36-45 days however, this year it is taking over 60 days. This has put great pressure on UK suppliers to embroider badges onto plain uniform items here as the badged uniform has been stuck in shipments.

"While this may not give you any comfort in this stressful time, rest assured we are working quite literally around the clock to get your orders out to you by the weekend."

The last shipment is due to arrive during the second week of September.

The statement added: "Any outstanding items will be packed shortly after this. We hope you can appreciate the unprecedented situation we are in at the moment.

"Our phone lines are very busy and we are answering as many calls as possible however, majority of our workforce are packing your orders, so please be patient with us."

One parent said: "Thank you for the update. Hopefully schools will be understanding if children are not in 100% perfect uniform this September."
