Parents urged to stick sparklers in peppers to make then safer for kids

Sparklers are a popular, fun element of any Bonfire Night celebration.

As professional displays are cancelled across the country, families might lean towards doing their own fireworks in the garden instead.

However, as fun as sparklers can be they're also very dangerous and can reach temperatures of up to 2,000°C.

In the run up to November 5, online firework retailer Galactic Fireworks is urging parents to stick sprinklers in peppers to make then safer to handle.

The pepper can help shield and protect their little hands further.

To do this, simply cut the pepper in half. Then, ensure you place the pepper below the end of the sparkler, so it stops burning before the pepper shield.

Further sparkler safety tips

  • When you hold a sparkler, always wear gloves and hold them at arm’s length.
  •
  • An adult should light sparklers one at a time.
  •
  • Once your sparkler is finished, put it in water or a dirt-filled bucket.
  •
  • Wear closed toe shoes when handling lit sparklers.
  •
  • Don't give a sparkler to a child under five-years-old.
  •
  • Never throw a sparkler.
