Parents in Glasgow urged to ditch car for school run as pupils return

Thousands of kids across Glasgow are getting ready to return to school for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown.

Over the past seven days, schools have been communicating their plans for a 'soft start' to parents and pupils, with some schools staggering the return of different year groups throughout the remainder of the week.

All pupils are due back full-time from August 18.

And as families prepare for the school run for the first time in months, parents are being urged to ditch the car and consider 'active travel'.

The call comes amid Glasgow City Council banning cars at drop off and pick up time at over 20 schools across the city.

Sustrans, Cycling Scotland, Living Streets, Paths for All, and Forth Environment Link say: "with many people still working from home, daily commute travel patterns are likely to have changed.

"The charities are asking parents to use the chance to make a positive change, by encouraging their children to travel to school in greener healthier ways."

Meanwhile, Transport Scotland suggest kids either walk, cycle or scoot to school: "With pupils heading back to the classroom, Active Travel organisations across Scotland are encouraging parents to think about leaving their cars at home when accompanying their children to school, and to walk, cycle or scoot instead."

Sustrans Scotland Head of Behaviour Change Lynn Stocks commented: “Over the past five months, many children have learned to ride bikes, many people have discovered their local area on foot. After months of break from routine, the journey to school is a chance to get a bit of regular daily exercise for both children and their guardians.

“And, for parents who may still be working from home, the walk or cycle to school and back offers a chance to start the working day with some exercise.”
