Parents Took Sons Aged 5 And 3 To Portugal Then Left Them Blindfolded And Alone In The Woods

What began as an alleged family “game” during a trip to Portugal has now escalated into a deeply disturbing case that has left the global public stunned.

Two young French brothers, aged 5 and 3, were reportedly blindfolded and abandoned in a forest in southern Portugal by their mother, Marine Rousseau, and stepfather, Marc Ballabriga.

Now, as details of the hours-long ordeal endured by the children continue to emerge, there has been widespread criticism of the parents, with many describing the incident as “harrowing” and incomprehensible.

One user wrote, “That’s so abhorrently disgusting, I don’t even have words… I got 2 children at the same age, I could vomit by the thought of this happening to them… How cruel!!”

The boys, whose identities have been withheld due to privacy concerns, were allegedly lured into the forest, blindfolded, and abandoned by their own mother and stepfather.

They remained lost in the woods for several hours before being discovered on the evening of Tuesday, May 19.

According to the children, the parents told them they could remove their blindfolds only after they successfully dug up a “buried knife” hidden in the dirt.

After digging desperately for several minutes, the older brother realized something was wrong, defied the rules, and removed his blindfold.

He then took off his 3-year-old brother’s blindfold, only to discover that their parents and the family car were completely gone.

Realizing they were alone, the two young boys carried their heavy backpacks and began walking through the dense, bushy terrain, wandering for hours in search of a way out.

Reportedly, through sheer luck and perseverance, the toddlers managed to navigate through the thick brush and eventually reached the edge of the quiet N235 rural road between the seaside resort towns of Alcácer do Sal and Comporta.

Covered in dirt, bruises, and scrapes, the boys stood by the roadside crying, screaming for their father, and walking along the tarmac until a passing couple, Eugenia and Alexandre Quintas, noticed them.

Alexandre told local media that each child was carrying a small backpack filled with a change of clothes, an apple, an orange, cookies, and water, clues that immediately led rescuers to believe the boys had been intentionally abandoned.

He told SIC Notícias, “To trick the children, their mom blindfolded them and left them in the forest to play a game. They told them to go and look for a toy.”

According to one of the local rescuers, “They were crying, they were terrified. They were crying and calling for their [biological] father”

Describing the boys’ emotional state when they were found, he said, “They were crying, they were terrified. They were crying and calling for their [biological] father.”

“The oldest one told me that he and his brother had gotten lost in the forest and that their father and mother had left without taking them. I realized right away that they had been abandoned…”

After the couple rescued the boys, doctors at Setúbal Hospital examined them and officially declared both children physically unharmed and in stable condition.

Following their medical discharge, Portuguese child protection authorities placed the brothers in temporary foster care while arrangements are being made for their imminent return to France.

Portuguese authorities have also launched an “urgent legal procedure” in the family and juvenile court in Santiago do Cacém.

Reportedly, the boys’ biological father, who is divorced from their mother, Marine Rousseau, has traveled from Colmar to Portugal to reunite with his sons.

Amid the investigation, the boys’ biological father reportedly told local authorities that the children had been “kidnapped” by their mother before ultimately being abandoned.

Authorities also revealed that both the father and the boys’ maternal grandmother had formally filed child kidnapping reports against Marine Rousseau after she allegedly took the children from France without authorization.

Jean Richert, the prosecutor in Colmar, told Correio da Manhã, “[The father] is like everyone else, he doesn’t understand. What was surprising was that [the mother] wasn’t home; she had no reason not to be, and she didn’t notify anyone.”

He added, “We managed to narrow down her whereabouts, successively in the south of France, in Spain, and in Portugal, but without being able to contact her.”

One netizen fumed, “Heartbreaking and utterly vile. Absolutely moved to tears thinking about such an evil act”

After roughly two days on the run, Portuguese police tracked down Marine and her partner, Marc Ballabriga, on Thursday evening, May 21.

The pair was reportedly spotted and taken into custody outside a café in Fátima, approximately 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of where the children had been abandoned.

The accused parents are now facing serious criminal charges across both Portugal and France.

Because the alleged crimes began with a cross-border flight from France and culminated in the children’s abandonment in Portugal, authorities in both countries have launched legal proceedings against the couple.

Reportedly, Portugal’s National Republican Guard and Judicial Police confirmed the pair are being investigated under Portuguese law and could face charges including child endangerment, abandonment, domestic violence, and child a*use.

Meanwhile, in France, they are reportedly facing charges related to international parental kidnapping and child neglect.

The couple appeared before a Portuguese judge earlier today at the Grândola court to determine whether they would remain in pre-trial detention.

While they are currently being held in Portugal over the alleged abandonment of the children, the pair could eventually face extradition back to France in connection with the European kidnapping warrants issued against them.

As the case continues to dominate headlines, psychological experts and child protection specialists have weighed in on the lasting trauma the incident may have caused the two young boys.

According to psychologist Melanie Tavares, “It’s the feeling of abandonment, of being lost, unprotected, of not having familiar resources to ultimately soothe the fear.”

Speaking to CNN Portugal, she added, “This will obviously bring, in the coming days, some symptoms to which those caring for these children will have to be very attentive.”

“We are talking about several situations, namely great difficulty sleeping, falling asleep and maintaining sleep, changes in normal routines including eating, irritability, or even almost permanent isolation, as well as great difficulty often in accepting rules and the context they are in, because none of this is familiar to these children.”

Melanie concluded, “These children will be in constant distress, a great deal of distress from abandonment, and distress from separation. This is a trauma that will remain, just like when we get a tattoo. It stays for life.”

One user wrote online, “Jesus, it’s like a real life Hansel and Gretel. How awful, those poor, sweet, innocent babies”
