Parents told to cover up children's faces outside school as cameras mysteriously appear on lamp posts

Parents have been told to cover their children's faces when leaving primary school after video cameras mysteriously appeared outside.

Residents spotted the cameras strapped to lamp posts outside Poplar Street Primary School in Audenshaw.

It's not known why they've been put there, or even who installed them, sparking fears among the community as to what the footage will be used for.

In a message to parents, the school's headteacher Iain Linsdell said: "A very observant parent has spotted what look to be unauthorised video cameras strapped to lamp-posts along Ravenwood Drive. The parent has rung the council and the police who have advised her to tell me.

"The police have suggested that I advise you to try to obscure your child's face as you leave school until they will come and remove them and investigate further. I'll keep you updated about this very strange turn of events."

Stuart Pridham took images of the cameras and shared them on the Audenshaw Past & Present Facebook page, where he said: "Anyone know what or whose these are on Ravenwood Drive? Looks like a homemade monitoring station, and is capturing anyone going up and down the road.

"The school have made a complaint, as have the residents of the street, the council have been notified and the police also. I fully expect someone will remove them soon."

The message sent to parents from headteacher Iain Linsdell (Poplar Street Primary)

He told the M.E.N: "My wife noticed them first yesterday as she walks into school everyday. She'd heard other parents talking about them as well, which made its way to the school so the headmaster of Poplar Street heard about them as well."

The Victorious Academies Trust, which runs the school, said it wouldn't make any comment as the issue was unrelated to school.

GMP confirmed they had received a report of the cameras.

The M.E.N has contacted Tameside Council for a comment.
