Parents to benefit from €100 increase to back-to-school clothing allowance

Some parents are set to benefit from fresh cost of living supports as the back-to-school clothing allowance will be increased by €100 per child from August.

Education Minister Norma Foley, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys and Public Expenditure Minister Michael McGrath are making the announcement to help families with the cost of living crisis.

There is also going to be a major expansion of the school meals programme that will see an additional 60,000 children receive a school meal from September.

Education Minister Norma Foley has also announced the Government is waving school transport fees which will impact 121,000 children.

The back-to-school clothing allowance will only impact those who qualify for the scheme.

The allowance, paid in respect of children aged between four and 11 years, will increase from €160 to €260, and from €285 to €385 for those over 11.

Payments of the allowance start next week, with the increased amount being paid from August.

Minister Humphreys also announced an additional 60,000 children will be eligible for the school meals programme from September.

It comes as Government has decided to bring the Budget forward to September 27 after coming under intense pressure to help households.

More to come.
