Parents sue over substandard nurse classes

Parents of two nursing graduates sued Christian University Tuesday for admitting students to its nursing courses for the 2017/2018 academic year despite the fact the degrees had not been approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

They demanded the private university refund all the tuition fees they have paid for their daughters.

Nittayayuk Chuenchomjit and Suksan Wisetso visited the Central Administrative Court to file the suit, claiming the university has provided their children with substandard bachelor's degrees.

Mrs Nittayayuk is the mother of Janjira Chuenchomjit, while Mr Suksan is the father of Kamolkarn Wisetso. Both graduated from the nursing school last year.

However, they have been barred from applying for a nursing licence as the courses at their university in Nakhon Pathom were considered below par by the NMC in May of last year.

According to the NMC's standard, the student-teacher ratio for nursing programmes must be at least 6:1, but the ratio at Christian University in 2017 was 15.39:1.

The NMC committee later ordered the university to stop admitting new students to its nursing courses until the problem was resolved.

Ms Nittayayuk and Mr Suksan blamed the university for using its nursing programmes as a cash cow and deliberately offering substandard courses as it knew graduates would not be able to get a nursing licence or work as professional nurses.

The parents demanded 470,000-480,000 baht in compensation.

Meanwhile, a group of nursing graduates and students from the same university who are facing similar problems submitted a petition to the Office of Higher Education Commission Tuesday requesting it look into the problem.

The Bangkok Post contacted Christian University for comment but it declined to reply.

Established by the Church of Christ in Thailand, it is located in Nakhon Pathom.
