Parents split after police seize alcohol from kids celebrating last day of school

Kids celebrating their final day of school with alcoholic have had their stashes seized by police.

Police in Warrington posted a photo of the drinks seized from schoolchildren on Friday (May 28).

The year 11 pupils will have been aged between 15 and 16 years old, and will have been celebrating their final day.

Police posted the photo of the alcohol that had been seized during patrols, showing cans and bottles of beer and cider as well as bottles of vodka and gin.

A spokesperson for Warrington Police posted: "Officers from the South Warrington Policing team are out and about tonight.

"Whilst we want year 11 pupils to enjoy their final school day, possession of alcohol will not be tolerated.

"Below is a sample of what we have seized from youngsters so far.... #DontDoIt".

The post on the Warrington Police Facebook page attracted a lot of attention with over 700 comments from parents who were split on the action taken by officers.

Some parents praised the move as they said drinking may have led up to a more serious incident, while others dubbed the police 'fun sponges' for taking away the illicit booze.

A woman called Lauren posted: "Am I the only one who would have wanted my 16 year old to have this taken off them, in the streets!! By all means, have a drink at home or a friends house / party supervised. I don’t want my precious little people being slaughtered in today’s streets."

Alex Daniels agreed, posting: "Just think about the drunk child that fell in the road in front of a car, or in the train line. Waste of life. You want them to celebrate, get them all round your house."

Tracey Hather disagreed, saying: "Party poopers after what they’ve gone through this past year and most of them denied a prom they couldn’t give them just one night as long as there’s not any trouble..".

Lee Holt posted: "Leave 'em be... Its all part of growing up... Everyone does this when they leave school, it's the law...".

While Sean Geraghty replied: "That's tight that, they would have waited outside a shop for three hours asking someone go in to the shop, they finally get it then you take it off 'em. years of dealing with boring lessons and you wont let 'em off for a night."

In the UK, young people aged 16 or 17 can drink beer, wine or cider with a meal if it is bought by an adult and they are accompanied by an adult. But it is illegal for this age group to drink spirits in pubs even with a meal.

Only people over 18 can drink in public, except in areas of towns where Public Space Protection Orders are in place.
