Parents reunited with kidnapped son 32 years after his abduction as a toddler

A couple in China have been reunited with their son after he was kidnapped as a toddler 32 years ago.

In 1988, Mao Yin is said to have been abducted aged two when his father Mao Zhenjing stopped at a hotel to get him some water on the way home from nursery.

As his father cooled down some hot water, he briefly looked away and the two-year-old was snatched.

But on Monday, the parents finally embraced their son - now aged 34 - at a press conference in the western city of Xian.

After Mao vanished, his parents spent decades searching the country for him.

His mother Li Jingzhi quit her job, sent out more than 100,000 flyers and appeared on several TV shows appealing for information.

Their long campaign helped 29 other missing children be reunited with their families, according to state media.

Finally in April this year a tip-off led the parents on a journey that would end in them finding their own son, state media said.

Police received information about a boy from Xian who had been sold to a family more than 370 miles away, for 6,000 yuan (the value of £690 today).

A DNA test then confirmed Mao Yin’s identity.

Renamed Gu Ninging, he had been brought up in the city of Mianyang without knowing that his parents had been searching for him for years.

Mao said at the press conference that he is not sure of the future but plans to spend time with his parents.

Mrs Li told reporters that she was given the good news on May 10 - Mother's Day in China.

"This is the best gift I have ever been given," she said.

The investigation into the 1988 disappearance is still ongoing and the authorities have not released information about the couple who raised Mao Yin.
