Parents panic as supermarkets across the country run out of baby milk

Parents have been thrown into a panic after supermarkets have run out of baby milk due to a nationwide shortage.

Supplies of Cow & Gate and Aptamil's readymade milk are short, due to a problem with one of the ingredients in the products.

Retailers including Tesco and Boots have reportedly been running out of the brands - although shoppers say tubs of formula powder are still available for parents mixing it themselves.

Singer Paloma Faith was among parents worrying about the shortage.

"The search for aptamil ready to drink continues ..... #mixfeeding," she tweeted.

When another Twitter user told her they found the product in Asda and Boots, the 39-year-old mum-of-two, whose second child was born in February, replied: "I tried them to no avail! Think in London everyone stockpiles!"

Aptamil website 'Aptaclub' has been warning customers there is a shortage of the ready to drink formula milk bottle products, even online.

It says on its site: "The current availability of our liquid milks is low and can vary by store and location.

"You could try calling ahead to see if your store has stock available, or try visiting different stores, including local pharmacies and independent stores which are often less heavily used."

Another mum replied: "I can't find it anywhere. It's starting to give me real anxiety!"

Cow & Gate told shoppers worried about the short supply that the lack of stock on supermarket shelves was due to an ingredient problem.

The brand's official Twitter account said: "The current low availability is caused by an issue with an ingredient used to prevent foaming during the production of these products, so we have stopped sending out these formulas while we investigate."

The brands are both owned by international food giant Danone.

The company told The Mirror stocks of its Ready to feed formula products were short at the moment due to "an issue with an ingredient used to prevent foaming" during milk production.

A spokesperson said: "We fully appreciate that this is unsettling and frustrating for parents and we are very sorry for this.

"We are working hard to get products back onto shelves as soon as possible. We are sending out supplies of liquid Aptamil First Infant Milk 200ml and a range of Cow & Gate First Milk and Follow On Milk liquid products, and these should start to be available in stores although this may vary by store and region.

"The current low availability has been caused by an issue with an ingredient used to prevent foaming during the production of these products.

"As a result, these formulas did not consistently meet our standards, so we stopped sending out them out while we investigated and resolved the issue. Production has now re-started at our factory and we are sending out supplies to retailers."

On Thursday, it appeared stocks remained low at some major retailers including online at Tesco, where four-packs of 200ml bottles had sold out.

Some parents said on social media they had managed to order ready to drink milks in their online shopping including with Ocado.

At Boots the entire Aptamil baby milk bottle range was sold out online.

Cow & Gate's babymilk appeared available for ordering from Superdrug and Apatamilk's ready to drink milks for babies was available online at Asda.
