Parents of boy, 5, who drowned in Greek hotel pool 'woke to screams'

The parents of a five-year-old boy who drowned in a pool at their Greek hotel were woken by screams, an inquest heard.

Theo Treharne-Jones was discovered in the water in Kos after wandering off alone before breakfast.

His parents Nina and Richard were woken by screams that there was a body in the pool, before discovering their child was missing.

Theo's death was described as a "tragic accident" at the hearing.

Coroner Rachel Knight was told in a written report from Greece that Theo was then discovered missing from their family rooms.

Theo, from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, died in hospital on 15 June at the Atlantica Holiday Village in Kos.

Ms Knight, assistant coroner for South Wales Central, adjourned the inquest until later in the year and released his body for the funeral service.

She sent her condolences to the family who were not present at the opening of the inquest.

It was the second year at the same hotel with parents Nina Treharne and Richard Jones, both 38, as well as his older sister and younger brother.

The family in a group of ten were staying at the Atlantica Holiday Village in north Kos after enjoying a "fantastic" holiday last September.

Nina and musician Richard told friends they had such a good time they wanted to go back this year.

But Theo is believed to have wandered off alone before his parents had woken up.

Police in Greece are investigating the tragedy and have quizzed Theo's parents and hotel staff over his death.

Richard plays bass guitar in a popular covers band called Red Heeled Suspects who play gigs and festivals across South Wales.

Theo's heartbroken mother Nina went on holiday to try to get over the death of her mother who died two months ago.

Neighbours said the family were extremely close - and Nina's sister Sarah, 36, and her family joined them for the sunshine break.

The sisters were heartbroken when mum Patricia Evans - known as Pat - died in April and were using the holiday to boost their spirits.
