Parents' left furious after Bannockburn High pupils left in cold

Pupils were left standing outside of Bannockburn High after a confirmed case of coronavirus last week.

Youngsters were left outside of the school building with Stirling Council saying “it was necessary”.

The council confirmed that NHS Forth Valley’s Test and Protect team is currently carrying out Covid-19 contact tracing at St Modan’s High, Bannockburn High and Bannockburn Primary.

A council spokesperson said: “Initial information suggests the virus was contracted outside of the establishments and there is no evidence at this stage of any transmission within these settings. Robust control measures were already in place to protect the health of pupils and staff.

“The individuals who have tested positive for the virus are self-isolating at home along with the rest of their household.”

Close contacts of the individuals have been identified and advised to self-isolate in line with national guidance.

Parents and carers at affected schools have also been contacted to inform them of the situation.

A council spokesperson added: “As we head into the October break, it is vital that everyone continues to adhere to the national restrictions to stop the spread of coronavirus and to protect themselves and others.”

Parents were left puzzled on Friday morning when youngsters were not allowed into Bannockburn High School, taking to social media during the incident, with some claiming the pupils were left standing in the cold for a number of hours.

One said: “My daughter phoned, she’s frozen cold. Told her to give it till 10.30 and if still outside just to come home.”

Another said: “Picked my boy up with no contact from school, freezing (he’s) been there for three hours with nothing to do. (I) was allowed to take him, they can’t comment and are waiting on guidance. He says there’s positive case in his year.”

Another parents said that by 11.15am she had still not been notified by the school of the incident.

One angry mum said: “That’s the school sent something out at 4.40pm! It’s a joke, why couldn’t they have done this earlier on?”

A Stirling Council spokesperson said: “Following an individual testing positive for Covid-19, it was necessary to keep a cohort of young people at Bannockburn High School outside for a temporary period of time this morning. This decision was made in consultation with NHS Forth Valley as an added precaution to keep young people safe, which must always be paramount.

“The school contacted the parents and carers of the young people affected to inform them of the situation and why this necessary step was taken.”

The latest positive cases in Stirling’s schools comes following a number of outbreaks. Last month, positive cases were confirmed at St Modan’s High, Riverside Primary, Strathyre Primary and Cowie Nursery.
