Parents' fury after daughter, 9, told to cover up as outfit 'distracts' schoolboys

A schoolgirl was 'asked to cover up' because her outfit caused a 'distraction' to boys in a Florida school.

Mum Kate Darrow said her daughter, nine, was told to wear a hoodie after an incident in Callahan Intermediate School last Wednesday.

The school's 2019-2020 student handbook stated a dress code that 'shirts must cover midriff area and may not have spaghetti or thin straps less than 2 inches'.

Her family and other students decided to stand up against the school rules and put on a 'peaceful protest'.

Kate's daughter wore a blue t-shirt to school that read 'Right to bare shoulders' while her older brother and two other students put on shirts with the slogan 'Real men aren't distracted by shoulders'.

Kate told Yahoo Lifestlye : "My friends and I came up with the idea for the shirts.

"We thought it would be somewhat of a 'peaceful protest'."

The parents, who hope to see the dress codes changed, met with school administrators on Tuesday.

Dad Rob said he believed the dress code targets female students despite it is written for both genders.

Rob and Kate believe the school is trying send students a message that 'they [women] should behave in a way that doesn't disturb or distract men'.

Rob added: "If someone is distracted because of a female is showing her shoulders, someone needs to tell that boy, 'You need to be able to focus yourself and women are not objects'."
