Parents Fight To Bring Baby Home After False Abuse Allegations

Newborn with collarbone knot led to abuse accusations

In the first half of 2022, a young couple experienced a harrowing ordeal that began with a concerning discovery about their newborn daughter. At just 6 weeks old, the baby was found to have a knot on her collarbone, prompting her parents to seek medical attention at a hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the couple faced a distressing accusation from medical staff, who insinuated that the infant's injuries were indicative of abuse. This led to the involvement of Child Protective Services (CPS) and a series of extensive medical tests, including rape kits, skeletal surveys, CT scans, and MRIs.

Subsequent scans revealed that the baby had between 8 and 13 fractures, raising further concerns about potential abuse and neglect. As a result, the parents were placed under a safety plan and their daughter was temporarily placed in foster care.

Over the following months, the couple navigated a challenging legal process, fighting to regain custody of their daughter. They faced emotional turmoil and missed key milestones in their child's development while awaiting a resolution to the case.

Finally, in November, there were positive developments as the couple appeared in court with strong support from their community. Testimonials from family, friends, and community members highlighted their dedication as parents, culminating in a pivotal moment where they were able to make their case for reunification.

Despite the hardships endured, the couple remained steadfast in their assertion of innocence regarding their daughter's injuries. They emphasized their commitment to seeking medical help for their child and expressed a deep desire to be reunited as a family.

Ultimately, the couple signed a stipulation presented by DSS, acknowledging the findings of the child abuse pediatrician without admitting guilt. This step marked a significant milestone in their journey towards bringing their daughter home.
