Two schools in Nottingham to change catchment areas

Parents could be given less choice when making school preferences for the year 2021-22 onwards.

Nottingham City Council has proposed to reduce the preferences parents can make for primary schools from six choices to four.

The council is also planning on changing the catchment areas for two city schools - Fernwood Primary and Middleton Primary, in Wollaton.

The catchment changes have been prompted by new housing estates that have been developed nearby, to ensure there are enough places for people who move in.

Both schools have received government funding to expand their intakes to deal with demand.

The catchment area of Middleton Primary will be changed to include a new 110 housing development on Woodyard Lane.

Another change will include moving the area of Tom Blower Close from the Fernwood catchment to the Middleton catchment.

The Fernwood catchment will include a new development on the Radford Bridge allotment site.

In the delegated decision it says: "The first change is to reduce the number of preferences parents/carers can make for a primary school place from six to four due to the increased availability of primary places across the city.

"The second change is to amend the catchment areas of Fernwood Primary and Middleton Primary to re-balance the size of the catchment areas to provide rational distribution of places and to maximise the number of pupils accessing a place at their catchment school."

A report to the council explains how the application changes will affect parents.

It says: "Parents/carers may name up to four schools in order of preference for a place in year 7 at secondary schools and for a place in reception year at infant or primary schools and up to three schools in order of preference for a place in year 3 at junior schools.

"Parents/carers are strongly encouraged to name the maximum number of preferences allowed to increase their chances of being offered a place at one of their named schools."

A consultation has been launched on the proposed changes.
