Parents could be hit with £70 fine if they park on pavements during school run

Parents could be hit with a £70 fine if they park on pavements during their daily school runs.

Children are returning to classrooms this week after almost half a year away.

So competition to find a parking space near to schools is expected to be fiercer than ever - which could result in some parents parking on pavements.

But a new 'antisocial parking' consultation, launched by the Government today (Tuesday), could see officials clamping down on this practice.

Under the proposals, councils will be given more power to fine drivers up to £70 for flouting the rules.

Car insurance expert at Confused.com Alex Kindred said it was a 'controversial issue.'

He said: "In some areas, roads are narrow which can make it tricky to find a parking spot.

"But it’s important that street-sides are kept clear for pedestrians, especially those trying to get through with pushchairs or wheelchairs.

“With schools reopening later this week, these areas are likely to become even more congested as parents battle to find a space to park. However, doing this could soon result in a £70 fine – a cost no doubt parents will want to avoid.

“Parking is something that causes a lot of confusion – where can we park? What are the rules? If you do return to a ticket on your windscreen as a result of unclear restrictions, you can use our checklist to show how you could challenge an unfair fine.”
