Parents claiming child benefits have hours to update HMRC before payments stop

Parents and carers have until the end of the day to notify HMRC if they still want to claim child benefits for youngsters aged 16.

Claimants may still be entitled to benefits for children aged between 16 and 20 if they remain in approved full-time education or unpaid training - as MirrorOnline reports.

However, child benefit claimants must notify HMRC by the end of today otherwise they risk losing their payments.

Parents could be entitled to continue to claim benefits if their child is remaining in approved full time education, which includes either A-levels, NVQs and home education.

16-year-olds going into unpaid training such as apprenticeships and traineeships will also qualify - but not if this training is part of a job contract.

Once HMRC have been updated, it will take into account the typical end date of the child's course or training so claimants will only need to get back in touch if the situation changes -

If your child decides to go into work, then you will no longer be eligible for child benefit.

How do I update HMRC?

You need to let HMRC know about your 16-year-old staying in education or training, or your payments will stop.

This could be done online by visiting Gov.uk and updating your records via the Government Gateway .

Or you can return the 297b form that HMRC sent you in your reminder letter.
