Parents celebrate news power station won't be built near Bristol nursery

Residents and environmentalists who waged a long-running campaign against a plan to build a power station in inner city Bristol are celebrating after the firm behind it ran out of time to appeal.

Conrad Energy wanted to build a ‘standby’ power plant on land currently occupied by a scrapyard, close to St Philip’s Marsh nursery school in St Philip’s.

The Oxfordshire-based company wanted to build three gas-burning generators with chimney stacks, and they were backed by council planning officers, who produced technical reports that the pollution caused would have ‘negligible impact’ on the children at the nursery.

But the local residents didn’t agree, and mounted a long-running fight against the plan, winning the admiration of the Mayor Marvin Rees in the process.

In the end, members of the planning committee rejected the plan by nine votes to one.

But because the planning officers had recommended it for permission, Conrad Energy were expected to appeal.

But now, the six month deadline for Conrad Energy to appeal has passed, leaving the campaigners delighted.

'Take a bow everyone'

“At the time we thought there was every chance that Conrad Energy would appeal,” said Stuart Phelps, one of the campaign’s founders.

“Today we got confirmation that they haven't lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate within the six months that they had to do so.

“So take a bow everyone who put in an objection, helped run the campaign, did some research, or funded the expert reports,” he added.
