Parents call for safer crossings near West Bridgford schools after series of near misses

Calls have been made for crossings in West Bridgford to be improved after a number of 'near misses' involving school children.

A petition has been made calling for Nottinghamshire County Council to upgrade zebra crossing around the town to pelican crossings.

It comes after reports of cars, vans and even buses failing to stop when young children are crossing the road.

The crossings in Rectory Road, Bridgford Road and Melton Road, are used by children attending West Bridgford infant and junior school.

Jatinder Hanspal, 49, from West Bridgford, has a nine-year-old daughter. He said: "It's been happening for a while - I've seen buses go straight through the crossing.

"This is not an isolated incident. It is every day. I think upgrading the crossings would 100% make them safer.

"I worry as a parent and I know I'm not the only one. When you can't trust other drivers to look out for your kids, it's difficult to go to let them walk to school themselves.

"It's just not safe and it would make a massive difference. There have been too many near-misses."

The petition, started by Mr Hanspal, says residents "shouldn't have to wait" for a serious or fatal accident before something is done.

Penny Gowland, who represents the area on Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: "I became aware of the petition on Sunday night, around the same time that I was involved in another petition about a 20mph speed limit only a stone's throw away.

"So clearly there is a big problem across the whole area with speeding and traffic, particularly because of the schools as we have heard cars are not stopping at the crossings.

"We want to allow our children to walk to school safely. There is a big issue there. Some cars are going too fast - and I've been told some buses are not stopping either."

Councillor Neil Clarke MBE, Chairman of the Transport and Environment Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “If a petition about installing pelican crossings in areas surrounding schools in West Bridgford is received, then it will be considered and discussed by our Transport and Environment Committee.”
