Parent call for Bunchems ban after toy gets stuck in child's hair

Parents have called for a ban on a popular children's activity kit after a toy got stuck in a child's hair.

Mums shared their frustration on social media over the Bunchems activity kits after reading about the toy becoming matted in the little girl's locks.

A conversation was started online by 'Jasmine,' on behalf of Elisha Squidge, whose daughter got the toy stuck in her hair, the Mirror has reported.

Bunchems is also known as Bunchamals.

Jasmine asked other parents on Facebook, for advice on how to remove the Bunchems from the hair, writing: "Any ideas how I can get these Bunchamals out of her hair. Tried oil conditioner and was recommended peanut butter nothings budging them."

The post attracted 9,000 likes and more than 8,000 comments.

Responses included similar horror stories and other called for the balls to be banned.

The toy's packaging does warn users to keep them away from hair.

The maker of Bunchems released  a video  shortly after they were launched in 2013, explaining how to remove them from hair.

One fellow  parent said it took her six hours to get the toys out of their kid's hair.

"It took us six hours to remove from my daughter’s long curly hair. It was horrendous. Don’t use water. Oil helps. Starting from bottom helps. You may need to cut some of them out too," they wrote.

Another said: "My daughter lost half a head of hair to these evil  toys,  four years later her hair still isn’t the same. Poor girl."

A third replied: "This happened to my stepdaughter I sat for a good few hours gently teasing them out with a tail combe bloody nightmare."

Someone else wrote: "These are a big no no!!"

Others shared their top tips for removing them from hair.

While some users shared tips on removing the toys with various oils, other parents said they had given up and resorted to cutting them out.

Bunchems experts advice:

  • Use vegetable oil or hair conditioner to soften the hair.
  • Brush the hair below the Bunchems, to remove any tangles,
  • Gently pull and slide the Bunchems to the hair ends.
  • If they don't budge, apply more oil or conditioner and keep combing underneath the Bunchems before removing.
