Paramount+ has confirmed that Frasier will be getting a reboot.
Kelsey Grammer, who starred as the sitcom’s title character, will reprise his role as Frasier Crane, though the streaming service did not specify whether co-stars David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin would be joining. (John Mahoney, who portrayed Frasier’s father, Martin, died in 2018.)
Additionally, Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli, known for their work on How I Met Your Mother and Life in Pieces, will lead the writing team.
In a statement, Paramount+ teased that Frasier is “more exactly the same than ever” but did not give an episode count, release date, or storyline.
The long-rumoured reboot has been in the works for quite a while now. In 2018, Gilpin, who portrayed radio producer Roz Doyle, alluded to the idea of bringing the show back. “If there was a way that everyone agreed on – not me, but David Lee and Peter Casey and Kelsey and Jimmy Burrows and all of those guys – and everybody thought it was a good idea, then yeah. Hell, yeah!” she said.
Also, in a 2018 conversation on the Hollywood & Levine podcast, Gilpin spoke to former scriptwriter Ken Levine about a possible reboot.
“It’s come up a few times over the years and from all kinds of places,” she said. “I don’t know, I don’t know what’s going on with it, I swear to God ... But what a great thing, that people are interested in it and people want to know, wonder what’s going on. I’m wondering what’s going on. My agents and manager are really wondering what’s going on.
“But I think it’s just in the works...,” she continued. “There’s a lot of people involved in this. People forget that it was a spin-off of Cheers, I mean younger people that have found it on Netflix, that means that there are so many people from Cheers that have to OK everything.”
During its time on air, from 1993 to 2004, Frasier earned 37 Emmy Awards over the course of its 11 seasons and 264 episodes on NBC.
