A teenager was expected to be taken to hospital in a serious condition after he was injured in the surf at Newcastle on Monday afternoon.
The Newcastle Herald understands the boy was surfing near Bar Beach when he hit his head on a sand bank about 4.30pm.
Paramedics, firefighters and police were called to the scene and were working from the Bar Beach carpark on Memorial Drive to pull the boy from a hard-to-access spot near the water.
He was expected to be taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition on Monday evening - emergency crews were finishing at the scene shortly before 6.30pm.
