Paramedic warns why you should never put frozen peas on a child's injury

While children are often enjoying the most exciting and adventurous days of their lives, bumps and bruises sustained along the way can put a dampener on their days.

For decades, parents have been raking through fridge-freezers for bags of frozen food to remedy and soothe any swelling and pain from scuffles and falls - but a former paramedic is warning that it might not be the best solution for young kids.

Founder of the Tiny Hearts Education, Nikki Jurcutz, says that frozen peas and sweetcorn straight out of an icebox can actually cause more damage in the long run.

Wales Online reports that taking to Instagram, Nikki explains the move could harm a baby's skin or even cause frostbite. She said: "WAIT! Before you reach for the pack of frozen peas and corn, make sure that you aren't putting something that's icy cold onto delicate skin!

"Putting a frozen object onto unprotected skin can lead to further damage (like frostbite - ouch!)"

In the video, she continues: "After a bump or bruise this is why you shouldn't put frozen peas directly on your baby. Frozen items are usually below 0 degrees. Putting it directly onto skin can cause frostbite and damage to delicate tissue. Instead always use a soft barrier such as a cloth towel."

She went on to give tips on other ways to treat an injury on a very young child adding: "Don't leave cold therapy on for too long."

The video quickly racked up thousands of likes and comments, with one viewer detailing how her son had suffered a burn from ice applied in the emergency department. Jay_dizzay said: "When my son went into SVT at 8 weeks old they (ED) put ice directly onto his face, he had burns for weeks. (Also, didn't even revert)."
