Paramedic warns parents to 'never put frozen peas on a young child's injuries'

Every parent and guardian knows that children will often get up to mischief on their adventures - often leading to bumps and bruises.

For decades, parents have been reaching for bags of frozen food to soothe the pain but one former paramedic is now warning against the idea altogether, advising parents not to reach for the frozen antidote.

Nikki Jurcutz, the founder of Tiny Hearts Education, says items such as frozen peas and sweetcorn straight from the freezer can cause more harm than good.

Posting on Instagram she explained the move could damage a baby's skin and can even cause frostbite.

She said: "WAIT! Before you reach for the pack of frozen peas and corn, make sure that you aren't putting something that's icy cold onto delicate skin! Putting a frozen object onto unprotected skin can lead to further damage (like frostbite - ouch!)"

In the video she says: "After a bump or bruise this is why you shouldn't put frozen peas directly on your baby. Frozen items are usually below 0 degrees.

"Putting it directly onto skin can cause frostbite and damage to delicate tissue. Instead always use a soft barrier such as a cloth towel."

She went on to give tips on other ways to treat an injury on a very young child adding: "Don't leave cold therapy on for too long."

The video has got thousands of likes and comments with one saying her son had suffered a burn from ice applied in the emergency department.

Jay_dizzay said: "When my son went into SVT at 8 weeks old they (ED) put ice directly onto his face, he had burns for weeks. (Also, didn't even revert).
