Paralympics gold medal hero Ellen Keane continuing her dad's badge collecting tradition in Tokyo

Ireland's latest Paralympics gold medal hero was ecstatic as she opened up on her family and dog at home following her Tokyo triumph.

The Clontarf native smashed her personal best to claim gold in the SB8 100m breaststroke final this morning, her first gold after a bronze medal at Rio in 2016.

And before she stepped on the podium as Paralympic champion, the 26-year-old opened up on her long journey from Beijing in 2008 to Paralympic glory today as she battled confidence problems in recent years.

As she celebrated, Keane was quick to thank her family and friends watching on at home, showing off her growing badge collection for her dad Eddie and joking about her dog Denny in Clontarf.

Her father usually collects badges when he attends the Games, but he couldn't travel to them this year because of Covid.

She said: "I want to take this opportunity to say hi to my family, who are stuck at home. I know they did get up at 3 am this morning to watch me race.

"I'm really grateful for them and all of their support.

"I'm collecting badges for dad, because whenever he comes to the games he does collect badges - so I am building the collection!"

On her family celebrating at home this afternoon, she added: "As long as my dog's okay (in the celebrations). Last night I was looking at videos of my dog thinking it will all be worth it I'll come home to you.

"I'm just more afraid because my parents have a dog, he's getting on really well so I hope he comes home to me."
