Hamilton boccia star Steph McGuire's hopes of a Paralympics medal took a major dent this morning as he lost 6-0 to Euclides Grisales in his final Group C match, meaning the Colombian progresses to the quarter-finals.
However, Steph will captain GB's BC4 Pairs team, which will see him team up with Louis Saunders and Evie Edwards from Thursday.
McGuire lost his opening match 4-1 against Hong Kong's Wong Kwan Hang, but beat Hapan's Shun Esaki 3-2, setting him up for a final showdown with Grisales, needing a heavy win to ensure he went through.
McGuire said: "It was a tough match. My opponent, the Columbian, is a World Championship silver medallist from Liverpool three years ago so it was always going to be very difficult."
McGuire, 37, remains upbeat about Team GB's pairs chances and said: "We’ve got a great chance in the Pairs.
"We’ve got Louis, and it’s his first Paralympics but he is a great athlete, and we’ve got Evie, who was in Rio, so she’s quite experienced at this level.
"Fingers crossed we can do a bit better in the Pairs."
