The Games organizing committee has announced that spectators will be banned in principle from attending Paralympic Games events, which are scheduled to start in Tokyo and three prefectures on Tuesday.
During a four-way online meeting Monday, The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Japanese government, the Tokyo metropolitan government and the International Olympic Committee made the decision to ban spectators from 22 Paralympic events at 21 venues in Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama and Shizuoka prefectures, taking into consideration the pandemic situation.
Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama prefectures are currently under a state of emergency, and Shizuoka Prefecture wants the central government to declare a state of emergency for the prefecture.
A field trip program under which children and students were allowed to watch events in Miyagi, Ibaraki and Shizuoka prefectures during the Olympics will be held during the Paralympics in consideration of the games' educational value.
Attendance will not be compulsory if municipalities and schools choose to take part in such events.
Members of the public will again be urged not to congregate on the streets to watch events that are held on public roads.
The four organizations said discussions will be held promptly if there are major changes in the infection situation.
